Amazing Gem
Just got back from here. It is amazing. 1st this is tent only. Restrooms are well kept by volunteer rangers. It is about 60 miles of dirt and gravel roads. You will need a high clearance vehicle to get within about 6 miles from the rim, and especially the last 2 miles. There are some large rocks to go over and between. You might be lucky to get through with a AWD SUV. Need good tires to get there. I rented a Jeep Wrangler with no issues and made it all the way to the rim, no joke. You need a permit, they release them twice a year, then 10 the week of. The rangers are awesome, but will be 6.2 miles away from the site the majority of the time. This is one of the least viewed spots of the grand canyon. The views are amazing. Don't be afraid to give it a try, but understand the risks as there is no cell service and a tow can cost over $2000. Before this week I hadn't driven off road for more than 30 years, but what an opportunity to seize.
